Dua Lipa - New Rules

I like this music video because of the camera angles and editing, however when watching it in class there were many mistakes that we pointed out, and one person even commented how you could tell it was low budget due to only a single location being used.

Audience Feedback

When receiving audience feedback for my adverts, the majority of people preferred the one with both yellow and pink in the bottom. However, my brother pointed out that the images didn't look connected, and that having a border might tie it all up. So I added a colour border to these adverts, and then a black one and will go and find out which one people prefer. In my opinion, I like the pink and yellow one with the black border.

Colours

The reason why the box at the bottom is green is because it is the same colour as the spade. I used the colour picker to get the exact same green.

After completing this version of the advert, I had the idea to incorporate the yellow and pink wall from our music video into this advert, so I made three different copies.

Two Adverts

I made the advert with the image I liked the most, but in the end I didn't like the way it turned out. I decided that all the images I had chosen were too overpowering for any text to be added on top. So, drawing inspiration from the Jessie J and Green Day advert (analysed on another blog post) I decided to make an advert using the front cover of my digipack. When making the advert I used the same font as the digipack to keep consistency and also added the record label logo to the bottom left corner. Plus, I added a website url that fans could go to if they wanted to buy this album or other merchandise.

Potential Photos

Here are some photos I might use for the Advert

I then cropped them to advert size using powerpoint. I'm not sure which one I would like to use so I might make 2 adverts using my favourite images and then carry out Audience Feedback to see which one everyone else prefers.

Hotel Cabana

I really like this digipack because of the colours used. The dark building stands out against the warm sunrise/sunset colours in the background. I also like the fact that the name of the album isn't part of this and is in its own section at the top with a dark background.

Final Digipack

Here is my final digipack!

Right Cover

I now have to add my CD to the digipack and i have chosen to make my CD the same as my album from cover as many other artists in the media do this too. I used powerpoint to edit this.

Left Cover

I wanted to add a quote in my digipack as previously mentioned on my blog post from 24/12/17. I decided to use the quote "It's all about pushing yourself beyond what you think are your limitations" but changed it slightly. I wrote it by hand using the trackpad in the same way I did my record label logo, however, when cropping the picture there was no possible way to remove the background (the white part) so instead I typed it up using the "Britannic Bold" font.

Digipack Feedback

I showed my digipack to a few people and these are some of the comments I received:

  • I like the colours, especially the back cover
  • Why did you choose that font? It looks good but does it have any meaning
  • What is the text at the bottom?
  • I don't think the front cover and the back go together
  • I love the spine, how the yellow and pink are used and that the text changes from black and white
  • I like how the map and spade from the video are incorporated into the front cover and CD
  • The continuity of the bench between the inside panels is clever.
To answer the questions in this feedback, I chose that font because its bold and I put it in capitals to stand out. This band produces fun, loud and upbeat music so their font should represent that. The text at the bottom is a quote I found from the actual band 'Walk the Moon' who sing our chosen song and I thought having a quote would make it more personal. I will add quotation marks to make it more obvious that it's a quote.

Giesle

The music video had a really intestine story behind it creating a nice pairing between the music and the video. The cut scene of the bright colourful pieces worked nicely with the tempo of the music and created a good break from the story line. What I don't like about this video is that some shots were slightly out of focus, taking my attention away from the video. The last shot with everyone looking into the box wasn't as sharp as it could have been, which would have let it finish on a high note. Other than that the story line is good, light hearted and really fits the music.

Harriet

I liked the video because of the dramatic yet realistic facial expressions. I also like the story line too and I feel that the camera angles along with the facial expressions enabled the audience to follow the journey of the actors which automatically engages the audience into the plot

Feedback from Family

Here is some feedback I received from family members.

"I like the friendship theme to the video and especially the blurry shot of the girls outside the school as it shows their really having fun and enjoying each others company. Also the framing of the books in the cupboard at the beginning is really nice. The shots of you putting the whole juice box into the basket is funny along with the man stroking the shovel. The bench shots take you out of reality which is what music videos do. However, I don't particularly like the bench shot at 1:38 as it seems so natural, almost boring. Maybe at the end there could be a bright light shining out of the box to make whatever's in there really spectacular."

"The energy and youthfulness of the music video shines through, but you should add different, more comical transitions if possible to add to the quirky theme."

Editing 17/01/18

Chiara (a friend of mine who doesn't do media) sat with us while we edited our music video, which was good as it gave us the point of view of someone seeing it for the first time. She's very critical and here are some thing she pointed out:

  • Maybe to reshoot Phoebe on the phone as it didn't look fully in frame
  • The bench shots were slightly blurry
  • Going from the shot of me receiving the box to everyone around me looked sudden
Here are some things she liked:
  • The shot of the man stroking the trowel was funny
  • The footsteps shot was good
  • Good friendship atmosphere
When editing I didn't like the fact that we had a freeze frame of the trowel on the ground as it looked too still, and everyone noticed how 'off' it looked after I had mentioned it. The only reason we did this was because Miss Fitzjohn said the original clip was too fast, but instead of keeping the out of place freeze frame I re-entered the original clip and slowed it down to 75% so it still looked natural but was longer.

Next we took onboard Katie's criticism of the footsteps and swapped the oder of them. Then Sophie pointed out that the clip was flipped so we unflipped it to put it back to normal.

Class Feedback

Overall the class liked our music video but we had mixed opinions on the shot of the girls outside the school. Some liked the blurriness of the shot but others said it stood out in a bad way as the other shots are so clear.

Another thing that was pointed out was how the shot of me on the phone was out of focus but we previously decided we were going to film that again.

Katie mentioned that the shots of us walking along the bridge and the footsteps didn't match, as we were walking down the bridge then it showed the foots walking uphill, then the same happened again but in the opposite order. This is one thing I want to change when editing.

Two endings

Arguably one of the most important shots is the end shot showing the groups reaction to what's inside the box. We filmed this twice and exported each version, then uploaded it on youtube. After we showed the whole class and their opinion was unanimous; they all preferred the first one.

Front Cover

I decided to use the image of the map and spade on the front of my digipack because they're the two most important props in our music video. First i had to make the picture square to fit the digipack and then I added the band name and album title. I chose to call the album 'Different Colours' as many albums are named after a song in the track list, such as 'Light me Up' by The Pretty Reckless and ''Hotel Cabana' by Naught boy. I chose this song as it is the one we are making our music video for.

I kept the font consistent to the one I used on my track list. The font is called "Britannic Bold".

Editing 16/01/18

Things we did today:

  • Added the clips of Phoebe and I on the phone, but my one needs re-filming as it's blurry
  • These clips slide in from the left and right and last 0.9 seconds
  • Match on action down the paths
  • Match on action of the digging
  • Flipped footstep shots
  • Modified walking shots
  • Zoomed in on a shot of the map to put emphasis on the compass
  • Added more digging
  • Added a close up of the box
  • Freeze frame of the trowel on the floor as Miss said it was too quick in its' original form

Halestorm - Dear Daughter

The reason why this video stands out to me is because of its strong narrative that represents the meaning of the song.

Record Label

I wanted to make my own logo for the record label that will be placed at the back, so I used the Trackpad feature on PDF files. It allows you to use your trackpad as a drawing board and is mainly used for signatures. I opened a PDF file I previously had downloaded to my computer and created three possible logos.

I chose to use the second one as i preferred the way it looked so I added it to my powerpoint and removed its background so there wouldn't be a white background when placing it on the back cover of my digipack.

Back cover

The first picture of the wall I took on my phone when looking at location ideas and this picture stands out to me as our song is called 'Different Colours' and this is a colourful wall, so I decided that I want to use it in my digipack. However the picture wasn't straight so using powerpoint I straightened it out and cropped it to a square size. I want my track list to be in bold, black writing and when i placed it on top the black thing on the wall and the white box were distracting from the text. To get rid of them, i screenshotted part of the wall and placed it on top, then faded out the edges so it looked natural, and you can not see them in my final picture.

Inside covers

I really liked this photo of the bench which comes from our music video and initially wanted it for my front cover, however when I cropped it to the size of a square it cut out most of the picture and didn't look good. So instead I had the idea to cut the picture in half and make it two squares for the inside covers. This way I get the whole picture and now the two pictures side by side will look good in the digipack showing continuity throughout.

Analysis 2

Here is two more adverts I have studied that have inspired me to make certain decisions when making my own advert, such as the possibility of having a website just like the one on the Jessie J advert; www.jessiejofficial.com

Things we changed

After finishing filming our music video there are quite a few things that we have changed since our last pitch.

Firstly we took out the regurgitation part as we liked the idea of the trowel being duct taped to the jacket better. Also because of this we can't have the shot of him regurgitating various items in the background as the girls run out of frame.

Another idea we have cut out is teddy bears in the forest having a picnic as a random idea purely because we forgot about it, which indicates how unimportant it was to the story line. Personally I didn't like that idea much anyway so I'm glad we don't have it.

The last idea we cut out was the girls putting breadcrumbs on the floor as they enter the forest as a "Hansel and Gretel" type thing, and the boy would eat them off the floor as he follows them.

Analysis 1

I have analysed the 'Adele 21' advert and 'Rihanna' advert by looking at their codes and conventions. This will help me when making my own advert.

Saturation

After we refilmed the shots in the morning, we uploaded them to the computer to edit. However, the corridor scene was quite dark in term of lighting so we brought the exposure down to 99%, the contrast to 10% and the saturation up to 134%.

Then for the scene in the cupboard it looked slightly yellow so we had to bring the contrast down.

After watching the whole video so far i pointed out that the shot of the receipt was quite grey compare to the rest of the shots.

Filming 12/01/18

We all came into school at 7:30am to refill our shots of Morgan in the school because the ones we previously filmed were blurry. We also filmed the scene of me on the phone.

Filming update

Box Shot

Initially we planned to film the last shot of the girls opening the box on the GoPro but we did not have access to it on that day, so we tried filming it on an iPhone. However we didn't get the framing we wanted as the box was too small to place the phone at an angle. Therefore we had Sophie filming on the Nikon camera with the lid of the box placed over the lens, so that when i lifted the lens it looked like I was opening the box.
