Editing

We imported all our clips into iMovie and edited them to look just like the music video.
One thing we found difficult was matching Francesca's mouthing to the song, so when filming our actual music video we will pay attention to this. One way we could overcome this is by recording the singer singing the whole song in one location, then another and so on, instead of doing it scene by scene.

We also has to add the real music video in the corner, so we used the picture in picture option on iMovie to do this.

Lastly, we layered the sound onto the whole thing and our Prelim is 27seconds long.

Filming

We used Francesca Sollitt to play Rebecca Black in our Prelim. It took us half an hour to film and we used a Samsung Galaxy s6 to film on.

We didn't use our storyboard much, we just referred to the music video and had that playing while we were recording. One thing we could do next time is direct clearer because Francesca had trouble doing some things the way we asked, for example the part where she swipes her bed covers over the camera. That shot took us 5 takes, so next time we should be clearer in telling our actress what to do.

Even though the music video is filmed in her house, we decided to film in school just for availability of actresses, plus the music video didn't include any obscure or random props so it was easy to do.

Genre ideas

My music taste is based around rock and alternative, however I don't want to do a music video based on this genre as I believe the music videos for those types of songs are always repetitive. There will almost always be shots of the band singing. I would like to do something different which is unique.

Goodwins theory

Goodwins theory consists of six main aspects that the majority of music videos conform to.

This includes
  • Gene characteristics - style and iconography
  • Relationship between the lyrics and the visuals - amplifying or contradicting
  • Relationship between the music and the visuals - editing to the beat
  • Multiple close up shots of the artists - 'star image' to sell the artist
  • Notion of looking - Screens within screens
  • Inter-textual references to other media texts- books, films, tv programmes

Storyboard

For our storyboard we used the shots that were in the music video and we will use this when filming our Prelim.

Prelim Song

In the end, we chose Rebecca Black - Friday. There are many reasons why we chose this song. Personally, I don't want to do a pop song for the Music video, so doing a pop song for the prelim allows us to explore other aspects of a music video. Also, the song we chose is well known and often ridiculed as a lot of people hate it, so filming this video will be a lot of fun as we can do silly things with it. Lastly, the 20-30seconds we will be filming is easy to replicate and has many shots so it will help with my editing skills.

Prelim ideas

For the preliminary task, I partnered with Morgan and we looked at different music videos to have an idea of what video we want to do.

We looked at

  • Alicia Keys - Fallin'
  • Michael Jackson - Beat It
  • Jacob Sartorius - Sweatshirt
  • Rebecca Black - Friday
  • Smash Mouth - All star

DOROTHY - Get Up

One convention of music videos, in fact all videos, is having multiple shots, however this music video subverts this. It is 2 minutes of Dorothy singing which is done in one take that keeps the audience engaged by focus pulls and Dorothy singing dramatically.

Oh My God - The Pretty Reckless

This music video follows the Rock genre conventions by having dark lighting, fast paced shots and shots of the band members.
The reason why I like this video is because it represents the left side of the brain and the right side by having the screen cut in the middle showing two shots. The shots are either the same, similar or different and this shows how the sides of the brain can overlap.
The left side vs right side idea is confirmed by the singer posting a # on Instagram.

Do I Wanna Know - Arctic Monkeys

This music video goes against all conventions by not having a clear storyline or showing the band members face. What introduces the band is the first image seen as that is what is on their album cover 'AM'. For the first minute and a half the lines follow the sounds and voice, whereas a conventional music video would show the lead singer singing. Then blue lines are added to represent the other band members singing. Then the lines turn into moving images.

Elastic Heart - Sia

Symbolism is a key element in this video as two people dressed in nude colours are trapped in a cage.  The girl can easily escape but stays in to help the man. This music video is edited to the beat and fast paced dancing is used mainly during the chorus while slower moves are done in the verses.
This video does not feature the singer which goes against conventions, but this is Sia's expected behaviour as she doesn't show her face in many places.

Dark Nights - Dorothy

This music video stands out to me as it is unique. The video shows the lead singer, Dorothy, going to get chocolate spread for her snack and this has no correlation to what the song is about. It is a comedic video accompanied by constant text at the bottom, which is the band talking to the audience. This technique intrigues the viewer and makes them with the video multiple times as they want to read what's at the bottom but also watch the video.

Group idea

For the music video task I would like to work with Morgan as we have similar ideas for what we want to do. Also we work well together just like last year.

Conforming to Goodwin's Theory

I have made notes on whether certain music videos conform to Goodwin's theory. The music videos I used are:
  • Dark Nights by Dorothy
  • Just Tonight by The Pretty Reckless
  • Violet by Hole
  • La La La by Naughty Boy ft. Sam Smith
  • Hard Times by Paramore
