Marvel CEO doesn't believe in female superheroes

The Sony Hack in 2014 released private emails between Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter and Sony CEO Michael Lynton to the public, and these show that Perlmutter is not in favour of female superheroes, hence why Marvel has so little in the Cinematic Universe.

However, other female fronted films have been a success, such as 'Wonder Woman' (2017), owned by Marvel rival DC, reaching a Box Office total of $806.7million from a $149 million budget. Also Hunger Games became a huge success allowing Color Force to produce three more films after its release. These films prove that female heroes are popular, yet there is still a lack of them on screen.

Marvel Fans have been asking for a 'Black Widow' film since her appearance in 'Iron Man 2' (2010) but Marvel have ignored this request and have continued to make various male fronted superhero films. 'Saturday Night Live', a popular American show, made a fake 'Black Widow' trailer starring Scarlett Johansson to mock the fact that there are hardly any female superhero films. The trailers main focus is Black Widows love life, again mocking the belief that womens lives are central to love and nothing else.

Marvel Studios has been adding films to their Cinematic Universe since 2007, and they have finally told the public they will release 'Captain Marvel', their first film based around a female superhero, in 2019. The MCU will have 20 films released before 2019, all of them containing a male lead. Why has it taken 12 years for them to accept that women can be superheroes too?

Music Video vs Film Opening

The differences between constructing a music video vs a film opening.

When filming for the opening sequence, we only had two locations; the park and the detectives house. However a music video requires several locations so before filming we must think of many different possible locations to use.

I believe editing a music video will be a lot harder as you have to edit to the beat so that the song and music video relates to one another. With our opening sequence we had a voice recording along with classical music so we had to edit those sounds to work together, but we only did this a few times, whereas a music video requires this type of editing throughout.

Plus, a music video requires a 'Star Image' for multiple shots, following Goodwins theory. Whereas for our opening sequence we did use an actor, but he was only shown briefly and there wasn't much attention on him until the end.

Todorov

Todorov is a theorist who came up with his own theory in 1969 that all films follow a specific narrative pattern.

Each film has 5 key stages:
  1. The Equilibrium. This is at the beginning of the film where everything is normal and all the characters are happy
  2. A disruption. Something unusual happens in the plot which disturbs the balance of everyday life.
  3. Realisation. The characters understand that something has changed and they have to work out what to do next in order to restore the balance.
  4. Restored Order. The characters repair the damage and get everything back to normal.
  5. A New Equilibrium. The ending of the film where everyone is happy and life is back to normal, but there may be a few positive changes.
For example the film 'Finding Nemo' (2003) follows this theory.
  1. Marlin takes Nemo to school.
  2. Nemo touches the boat and is taken by a diver.
  3. Marlin and Dory set about finding Nemo.
  4. They eventually find him.
  5. The ending of the film shows Marlin taking Nemo to school again, but this time he is more trusting in his son.

Russian Song

The reason why I chose to talk about this music video is because of its editing. Some shots are used multiple times yet the repetition is effective. Also a few are reversed which makes them stand out.

One particular shot I like is when the dice is thrown into the coffee because once one goes in, the whole shot is frozen apart from the second dice spinning rapidly in place. It is effective as it makes the viewer watch it again to really notice whats happening.

Another shot I like is when the man moves his hands and the camera moves at the same time. It is an illusion that makes it look like he is moving to the side.

Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk Ft. Bruno Mars

Colourful outfits and coordinated dancing is something we can take from this music video. These two elements are a huge part of what makes the music video so enjoyable to watch.
