Chance Street

Chance Street in Shoreditch is a very artistic setting which we could possibly film at. The only problem is that it doesn't have one coloured walls which is what we were looking for, but this could be a back option.

Paramore - Hard Times

I would like to shoot our music video with colourful backgrounds, such as coloured walls. However this may be hard to find as we don't have the money to create it ourselves. If we can't find anywhere like that, we could film on colourful streets such as in Camden, and use digital effects like the ones used in this music video. I like these as it gives the music video a fun type of vibe. Our only problem is that it would be extremely hard to do this on iMovie, so we may have to use a different editing software such as Sony Vega.

Drake - Hotline bling

This music video hasn't got many props or have any particular storyline, it is mainly just the singer in a large empty room. This draws the audiences attention to him, putting all the focus on his performance and singing. It may be seen as basic, but it is affective, with the video reaching over one billion views.

Katy Perry - California Gurls

'California Gurls' was released in 2010 and fits our idea of a pop genre and having a fun, colourful music video.

Director Mathew Cullen told MTV he didn't want anything summery in the video as the lyrics were already so literal that he wanted something thats a metaphor for the meaning of the song. His concept stood out to Perry as the song invokes strong visuals so he wanted to do something a little different.

As I would like to do a pop song for our music video, I drew a lot of inspiration from this music video and I have learnt that pop music videos have to be fun and wacky, and don't have to always make sense.

The song was labelled a 'summer anthem' due to its upbeat tune which led to it reaching no.1 on the US Billboard Digital Songs. To accompany this song, the singer created a music video with director Mathew Cullen consisting of pink clouds in a sweet filled place. The aim of this music video, according to Katy Perry, was to re-imagine the state as Candyfornia instead of California. The normal conventions of a California based music video is a party on the beach, but Katy wanted something different.

Song idea - Season 2 Episode 3

This could be a potential song for us to use in our Music Video because it is fun which fits our idea of a colourful, random music video.

One thing i like about this video is the jump cuts in the beginning which shows the passing of time. It also tells the audience how bored she is because she is just laying around doing nothing

Things that need improving

There were many problems in our prelim that would need fixing. However, having these errors pointed out exactly what we need to focus on for our actual music video.

There was a shot with a door behind Francesca, and this made the shot look dark. When we film next time we will make sure that we don't film in a setting like this, or we have bright lights behind the camera.

Another thing is that Francesca's lip singing was out of time in some parts, and that was due to our editing and the fact that she sang out of time. Next time we will try to direct more clearly and spend more time editing our work.

Prelim Feedback

In our media lesson we watched each others prelims and wrote down what went well and a question we wanted to ask. After we showed ours everyone gave us back our feedback.

One question which came up a lot was whether we would film in a different location if we had time. Preferably, yes, as the actual music video was filmed in the girls bedroom.

Radiohead - Burn The Witch

I like this video because its made using clay stop motion which is difficult yet effective. If I had the artistic ability I would love to include an element of stop motion into my music video.

La La La - Naughty Boy

The music video for this song does not include the singer or any song based performances in it, the whole video is about the narrative. It follows the young boy helping others break away from what keeps them unhappy and they follow him to a cave and leave him there. The video has indications of being based of 'The Wizard of Oz' by having the dog represent the lion, the traffic warden is like the scarecrow and the man with the grey face represents the tin man.

As well as referencing 'The Wizard of Oz' the video is also related to a Bolivian legend. The 19th century legend involves a young deaf boy who has fled from his home due to abuse, and he finds a stray dog that keeps him company. He then realises that he has the ability to find out and cure people’s troubles by screaming, which is said to be as loud as an earthquake. He finds a man being stoned and shouted at by others, so he helps him by repairing his heart (the part in the video where he gives him the heart). Both of them then come across a disfigured man who is seen as an outcast. The boy then discovers that he was cursed by El Tio, a demon who was filled with rage. The man somehow tells the boy that anyone who could hear El Tio would fall under his control. Together, they find El Tio in the desert and they leave the boy with him as the boy could not fall under El Tios control as he is deaf, and the boy uses his special ability to overpower El Tio and stop him from cursing others.
