Katy Perry - California Gurls

'California Gurls' was released in 2010 and fits our idea of a pop genre and having a fun, colourful music video.

Director Mathew Cullen told MTV he didn't want anything summery in the video as the lyrics were already so literal that he wanted something thats a metaphor for the meaning of the song. His concept stood out to Perry as the song invokes strong visuals so he wanted to do something a little different.

As I would like to do a pop song for our music video, I drew a lot of inspiration from this music video and I have learnt that pop music videos have to be fun and wacky, and don't have to always make sense.

The song was labelled a 'summer anthem' due to its upbeat tune which led to it reaching no.1 on the US Billboard Digital Songs. To accompany this song, the singer created a music video with director Mathew Cullen consisting of pink clouds in a sweet filled place. The aim of this music video, according to Katy Perry, was to re-imagine the state as Candyfornia instead of California. The normal conventions of a California based music video is a party on the beach, but Katy wanted something different.
